Kolkata, Aug 27: Crime against women continues uninterrupted in West Bengal. On Saturday night, a man was nabbed for molesting the daughter-in-law of a former minister at GD Block in Salt Lake. The accused, identified as Abdul Malek, snatched the victim's mobile phone but when the latter tried to resist him, Malek allegedly molested her. The victim is a resident of the HB block.

A green police volunteer posted in the area chased and caught Malek and handed him over to Bidhannagar South police. He was produced at Bidhannagar additional judicial magistrate court and remanded in judicial custody till Sept 7.

The victim said later that Malek, who was coming from the opposite direction on a bicycle while she was returning home around 8 pm, suddenly snatched her mobile phone. She, however, did not let Malek away and managed to catch hold of him. It was then when Malek allegedly molested her, said the victim. Malek tried to flee with his bicycle when the woman shouted. An on-duty green police volunteer who was in the vicinity rushed to her aid and chased the man. He was soon caught and handed over to the police. The victim later lodged an FIR against Malek.

Probe revealed later that Malek is a vegetable vendor and resident of Bhangar in South 24-Parganas district. Police were trying to find out why he came to Salt Lake and whether he was a member of a snatching gang.

Four cases of snatching have been reported in the Salt Lake area in the last one week. About 150 green police volunteers have been deployed in the township. Residents are, however, loving days under fear.
