Man Utd beat Fulham 3-2, Chelsea win 2-0 vs Newcastle
Manager Alex Ferguson made a brave decision to drop star striker Wayne Rooney as he opted to start with new signing Shinji Kagawa, who also scored his first goal, and Van Persie upfront.
Rooney, however, made a second half appearance against the Cottagers but didn't expect to finish the game with a knee injury. The 26-year old suffered a nasty gash with Hugo Rodallega. Rooney tried to block the shot from the Colombia international and ended slicing his knee after landing on him.
With Rooney out for a month, there seems to be no problem for Fergie in attack as he builds his team around recent signings. Van Persie got on the scoresheet seven minutes after Manchester United went down to Damien Duff's opener.
Rooney's poor performance against his former club may have cost him a starting place but Van Persie was involved in Kagawa's goal as the Dutch star is also given the duty of taking corners.
Rooney's performance at Euro 2012 was also questioned as the striker scored just 1 goal in three games. But England's overall performance is to blame.
Roy Hodgson is set to name his England line-up for 2014 FIFA World cup qualifiers against Moldova. However, the former West Brom manager may opt to keep his big guns out after youngsters impressed against Italy in a recent friendly.
