Madrid, Aug 11: Barcelona playmaker Xavi Hernandez has been rested for Spain's friendly against Puerto Rico on Wednesday, Aug 15 to allow the 32-year-old midfielder prepare well in advance for the upcoming La Liga season.
"In the case of Xavi, I spoke to him yesterday and we decided not to bring him so that he can prepare well", Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque said during a press conference at the Spanish Football Federation in Madrid.
Arsenal new signing Santi Cazorla made the squad while Fernando Torres also retained his place. Barcelona team-mates forward David Villa and defender Carles Puyol have been rested after recovering from long injury spells.
Spain kick-start to defend their World Championship crown away to Georgia on Sept 11. The La Roja Furia are placed in Group I with former World and European champions France, Belarus and Finland for the 2014 World Cup qualifying stage.
