Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu, Jul 29: Authorities on Saturday said that an 'under-construction' tunnel originating from the Pakistani side of the international border in Jammu and Kashmir have been found near an army post in the Samba district. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Israr Khan said a farmer had detected a 'stretch of sunken earth' on Friday near the Chinari border post of India, about 55 km south of Jammu. He said they had reported the matter to the BSF and got the area dug on Saturday. "We found a tunnel heading towards the Pakistani side after digging up about 25 feet deep," he said.

The SSP informed that the tunnel is three-feet in both the height and diameter and has oxygen pipes running along. He said the tunnel was under construction and could be about 400-500 metres long.

The Pakistani post of Lambryal is located about 500 metres from the Chinari Post and since the area is covered with thick forest, it is not always possible to detect what's going on across, said an official.

Israr Khan said the matter was being probed by all agencies but it seemed to have been laid to facilitate infiltration and arms smuggling from the Pakistani side. Indian security agencies have been telling that increased vigilance on the frontiers and erection of the fencing had checked infiltration from the western neighbour.
