The two teams have faced each other a number of times notably the UEFA Champions League finals in 2009 and 2011 as well as the semi-final in 2008. Both teams also met in a pre-season clash on Jul 30 last year in Washington DC, where the Red Devils beat the Catalans 2-1.
Both teams will look to prove a point prior to the start of the new season in their respective leagues. The two European giants are expected to showcase their full squad post Euro 2012 rest periods. However, Ryan Giggs, David De Gea and Barca new signing Jordi Alba could be amongst those at the London Olympics.
As part of United's pre-season tour to Sweden, Norway, South Africa and China, the two teams agreed to play a friendly match on Aug 8 at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg.
"Manchester United against Barcelona is one of the top fixtures in world football and we are delighted to work with GotEvent to bring this match to the beautiful city of Gothenburg. We have a large following throughout Scandinavia and it's great that this match will form part of our preparations for the new season," Manchester United chief executive David Gill said.
The match at the Ullevi Stadium will be only the Red Devils' second game in the Swedish city during Sir Alex Ferguson's time as manager, the previous occasion was in Nov 1994.
