2 world records in archery; Indians disappoint

London, Jul 27: India did not have a good start in archery at the London Olympics 2012 in the individual ranking event at the Lord's cricket ground. Tarundeep Rai was 31st after the end of individual ranking round. In the team event, India ended last at 12th. They will play Japan for a place in last eight.

The other two Indians in the competition, Rahul Banerjee and Jayanta Talukdar were in 46th and 53rd places. There were 64 men in fray. Rai tallied 664 points while Banerjee had 655 points and Talukdar 650.

Lord's the venue for archery

The ranking round is used to rank the athletes from one to 64. The athletes then shoot in a head-to-head elimination format, shooting in pairs. The number one athlete against the athlete ranked 64th, second against 63rd and so on. The competition is the best of five sets, with each athlete shooting three arrows per set.

South Korean archers called the shots by taking the top three positions. Dong Hyun Im topped with 699 points with a new world record. His compatriots Bubmin Kim (698) and Jin Hyek Ho (690) were second and third respectively. Im, who is legally blind, broke his own record.

South Korean team also set a new world record. Im, Kim and Ho also set team world record for 72 arrows with a score of 2087.

World number one archer in women's, India's Deepika Kumari will be in action later in the day.

After 66 arrows, Rai is 32nd (608), Banerjee 47 (601) and Talukdar 52 (597). South Koreans are dominating the event by occupying the top three places.

After 48 arrows each, India are not even in the top 30. Rai is in 31st place with 443, Banerjee is 41st, 440 and Talukdar 53rd, 433. They have their task cut out as the qualification continues.

At the moment, Banerjee is in 43rd place in the rankings while Rai is in 47th followed by Talukdar in 51st. In the team event, Indian men are 12th. The competitions are still going on.

There are 64 archers in the men's individual event in the preliminary stage and 32 will be eliminated.
