Hockeyroos go down 0-4 to the Dutch in practice match

London, Jul 23: The Netherlands, top-ranked in women's hockey, drubbed the Hockeyroos 4-0 in a practice match on Sunday. The match was played on the blue turf at the Riverbank Arena, the official venue for this year's Olympic matches.

The Australians came confident into this match after defeating Great Britain 2-0 in their first warm-up match on Friday but they found the No. 1 side in the world too hot to handle. The Dutch kept the Hockeyroos, a comparatively young side, under constant pressure and the latter got little chances to counterattack.

Kitty van Malle made it 1-0 capitalised on the space created in the Australian goal circle and scored by a reverse strike. The lead would have doubled within seconds of the first goal but Oz defender Kate Jenner nullified a possibility created from a soft turnover. But the relentless Dutch went 2-0 up after 20 minutes and it was again Malle who hurt the Hockeyroos. The Australians paid the price for giving away possession of the ball too easily.

Australia tightened things in the second half and came close to scoring when Anna Flanagan flicked one just off the target. Kelly Jonker scored the third goal for the Dutch while Malle set up the opportunity for Kim Lammers to score the final goal.

The Australians, ranked seventh, will face Korea in their final warm-up match. They will take on their trans-Tasmanian rivals New Zealand, ranked sixth, in their first match on Jul 29.
