The party's announcement has brought relief to Pranab Mukherjee just a day ahead of the crucial election when the stage is all set to get the 13th president of India.
After conducting a meeting with party's honorary president and YS Jaganmohan Reddy's mother, YS Vijayalakshmi, YSR Congress MP Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy said, "Our decision is above politics. We hope that Mr Pranab Mukherjee would do justice to the post of constitutional head."
Talking about the party's decision about vice presidential poll, the MP also informed that they will go with UPA's choice and thus they will support Hamid Ansari.
YSR Congress has two MPs and Congress MP Sabbam Hari is known as its loyalist. The party had total 17 members in the state assembly of Andhra Pradesh.
The party chief Jagan, who is currently lodged in Chanchalguda jail in Hyderabad, got permission to cast his vote from the assembly poll booth in Hyderabad.
According to norms, Kadapa MP Jagan should cast his vote at the polling station in Parliament in New Delhi as he is a parliamentarian. But he will not be able to do so as he has been sent to jail over his alleged role in several corruption cases in Andhra Pradesh.
However, the party's decision of supporting Pranab Mukherjee might have disappointed PA Sangma, the sole candidate against Pranab Mukherjee in the race to Raisina Hill.
Sangma earlier had failed meet Jagan in jail but conveyed his message to Vijayamma while campaigning for the election in the state. Later, Pranab Mukherjee too called Vijayamma seeking support for himself.
