New Delhi, Jul 11: Even as several organisations continued to protest against a student in West Bengal being forced to consume urine on Jul 7 to supposedly cure her of the habit of bed-wetting, Swami Agnivesh asserted that the method was a "traditional cure" for the condition that is quite common in young children.

"Why is there so much fuss made about the suggestion given to Visva-Bharati' Patha Bhavan schoolgirl who was suggested to consume her own urine by her hostel warden, Uma Poddar, as a cure for bed wetting. It is a simple piece of advice by the hostel warden, which has created so much ruckus by the girl's parents and then by the media," the social activist noted.

Ever since news broke about the warden of Visva-Bharati University's Karabi hostel making the girl whose name is Punita drink urine, the Patha Bhavan where she studies has been the target of widespread ire.

Agnivesh avers that the warden was right to insist on the method of treatment called "Shivambu" or "Swamootra Chikitsa". He narrated his own experiences at the Ambala Jail wherein he spent time during the Emergency.

"For many, the traditional cure may sound abhorrent and feudal. I practised it myself for months. I read books on nature cure and found this method described. I had this problem of bed wetting till quite an advanced age. Shivambu Cure helped reduce it," Agnivesh said.

Besides citing former Prime Minister Morarji Desai who used to advocate consumption of urine, Agnivesh claimed that former Defence Minister George Fernandes and the late Devi Lal had also benefitted from the traditional cure.

Incidentally, the warden Uma Poddar was arrested yesterday on the basis of a complaint lodged by Punita's parents. However, she got bail soon after.

Following the outrage, the Prime Minister's Office has demanded a report. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has also asked the West Bengal government to submit a report.
