Guwahati, Jul 1: Rumi Nath, a Congress MLA, who was beaten and thrashed by mob in Assam allegedly for eloping with her Facebook friend, claimed that the angry people tried to rape and kill her.

"I got attacked by some boys who were drunk. They even tried to rape me and take my clothes off, so it's an attempt to murder and rape. Since I got married it has been a political issue; its 100 per cent a political conspiracy," claimed Rumi who is currently under treatment as she got serious injuries when the mob attacked her and her husband in a Karimganj hotel on Friday, Jun 29.

Seeking justice for herself, the MLA also asserted, "I don't know these people, these guys. I have nothing to do with them. So why have they done it? I want to know the reason actually because I have never faced it. I have never seen them. I want to know why they have been used like this."

However, many people claimed that Rumi herself had invited the wrath of various groups as she was accused of bigamy, theft and illicit relationship.

33-year-old Congress MLA was thrashed for allegedly leaving her first husband and 2-year-old daughter and eloping with her Facebook friend, 28-year-old Zakir Hussain. She converted to Islam and married Zakir in May 2012.

The incident took place after Rumi went to meet her father. The angry mob beat up her bodyguards as well.

Rumi was married to Rakesh Singh, an Uttar Pradesh based physician, four years ago and has a 2-year-old daughter with her.

According to police sources, Rakesh Singh had lodged a complaint after he suspected that his wife was abducted.

It later emerged that Rumi married her Facebook friend and went into hiding for several weeks.

After resurfacing back, she admitted that she married Zakir without divorcing her first husband and had converted to Islam. She also alleged that her first husband beat her up and threatened her of dire consequences at various occasions.

Defending herself over her decision to marry, she said in a television interview, "I am not committing any crime. I have no fear and am ready to face every situation."

Meanwhile, police arrested five persons who allegedly beat Rumi and her partner in the hotel.
