Sangma gets BJP thumbs up in Prez poll

New Delhi, Jun 21: Putting aside all rumours and controversies on the BJP's Presidential nominee, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj announced that former NCP leader and prominent leader from the North East PA Sangma has been nominated by the BJP for the President's post. Sushma Swaraj added that they have the support of their ally Akali Dal for Sangma's candidature.

The BJP, through this move, has decided to put up a fight against the UPA's Presidential candidate, Pranab Mukherjee. They added that the Shiv Sena and the JD(U) were not in favour of a contest in the Presidential poll. Sushma stated, "Will give UPA nominee a good fight". She added on Pranab's nomination, "Considering what Pranab has done to the country, there cannot be a walkover for him."

Expressing the party's irk on the UPA not consulting with the Opposition BJP, Sushma Swaraj said that the UPA failed to reach out to the NDA or the principal opposition party on the Presidential nomination. Arun Jaitley, also present at the press conference stated, "Contest is an idea integral to the democracy, not alien to the democracy. We want to play the role of the principal opposition party."

On the matter of rift within the NDA over the Presidential nomination preference, Sushma stated categorically, "NDA is a mature alliance, there is no question of it breaking down. We were trying to bring our alliance partners on board, we could not do that."
