Reports reveal that Pranab Mukherjee stands a good chance in becoming UPA's Presidential candidate. A likelihood of consensus on Pranab may also come down to the debate on whether the Centre will allow a special package for West Bengal. West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra will meet Pranab on Monday to discuss the financial package for the state.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee had told Mamata Banerjee, while she visited the capital that an interest waiver was not possible as other states too would start demanding the same.
The step comes after Congress leader and minister in West Bengal Manas Bhuniya appealed Mamata Banerjee to extend her support to Pranab if the High Command chose him as the candidate.
"We are worried about the Trinamool Congress' non-committal attitude, it is significantly quiet in this matter," said Bhuniya on being asked why he made the appeal.
