Djokovic was looking to become the first man since tennis great Rod Laver to win four consecutive majors. The World No 1 gave it his all and even reeled off six straight games to win the third set 6-2 after Nadal had bagged the first two 6-4, 6-3.
Djokovic won the first two games in the fourth set too, only for Nadal to restore parity. Neither player could gain an advantage in the next seven games. In the 12th game, Djokovic served to stay in the match but a double fault on championship point proved to be costly.
The Serbian's mistake meant the match finished earlier than what most fans had wished for. In the end, Nadal proved once again that he is the undisputed king of clay.
