Bangalore, Jun 9: The army and the police, in a joint operation on Saturday, rescued 400 people who were left stranded at the Khardung La Pass in the Leh district following a landslide in the area on Friday. The landslide hit the Leh-Nubra road in the morning, trapping 80 vehicles carrying mostly passengers, including some foreigners.

Many of the stranded passengers were affected by mountain sickness, official sources said, adding that there were no casualties. Police launched a massive road-clearing operation in the evening to make way for the stranded vehicles. Senior administrative officials and police personnel were on the spot supervising the rescue operation.

Khardung La in Ladakh is known to be one of the highest motorable passes in the world. It is also a popular tourist destination visited by adventure-lovers every year.
