Andhra: Hampi Express collides with goods train, 25 dead

Hyderabad, May 22: Around 25 people were killed and over 60 injured when the Hampi Express collided with a goods train in Penneconda, Andhra Pradesh at 3.45 am on Tuesday on its way from Hubli to Bangalore. Sources said that 16 of the victims were charred to death.

Reports reveal that the three bogies of the Hampi Express got derailed following which the first two compartments of the train caught fire. There was a short circuit in the first compartment.

Meanwhile, rescue operations are underway. All those who were trapped under the bogies have been rescued, while four bodies are still struck in the wreckage, said reports.

The Railway Ministry has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the dead, Rs 50,000 for those who suffered minor injuries and Rs 1 lakh for those who sustained grievous injuries.

SK Mittal, Commissioner of Railway Safety (Southern Circle) will conduct an inquiry and submit a report in the case.

According to reports, Hampi Express was overspeeding and overshot the signal following which it collided with the goods train. The same was, however, not confirmed by the railway spokesperson.
