Islamabad, May 21: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani ordered the lifting of ban on Twitter, after the micro-blogging site failed to remove blasphemous content against Islam.

"The Prime Minister has ordered the IT Minister to restore Twitter service in Pakistan," said Fiza Batool, daughter of Yousuf Raza Gilani in a message.

"Dear all, I assure (you) that Twitter and (Facebook) will continue in our country and it will not be blocked. (Please) do not believe in rumours," said Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik.

Earlier, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) blocked Twitter following a controversy over caricatures of Prophet Muhammad, which Muslims consider blasphemous.

Despite of repeated calls to the Twitter authorities, the efforts of Pakistani officials went in vain, following which the ban was implemented.

Earlier in 2010, social-networking site, Facebook was banned by the Lahore High Court over the same reason.
