P Chidambaram
New Delhi, May 10: With Home Minister P Chidambaram under fire once again for his alleged involvement in the Aircel-Maxis deal, the ruckus in the Lok Sabha showed how the Opposition wants to rake up the issue again. The Opposition called it a ‘big scam’ and also pointed fingers at Chidambaram’s son. The Home Minister, however, dismissed all charges and called it ‘wild and reckless’.

Vehemently denying that neither he nor any member of his family had acquired or presently had any stake in Aircel or Maxis. The Home Minister’s son, Karthi had also released a press statement on the same lines. Chidambaram read out the press statement in the floor of the House. It said, “I categorically state that neither me nor any member of my family have acquired or hold any stake in Aircel or Maxis. The person is known to make wild and reckless allegations. It is deeply regretted that the privileged forum of Parliament is misused to level wild and reckless allegations against a private citizen.”

Senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha had accused Chidambaram and his family of having a 5 per cent stake in either of the companies. With other members also shouting and raising a ruckus demanding Chidambaram’s resignation, the Union Home Minister also objected to the manner in which Sinha raised the issue giving any notice. He replied on the melee, “I pray to God to forgive their sins.”

According to reports, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is backing Chidambaram and given their go-ahead in tackling the allegations levelled by the Opposition in the Aircel-Maxis deal.
