Baby Afreen
Bangalore, Apr 12: Family of battered Baby Afreen, who died on Apr 11, duped her mother Reshma Banu into marriage after promising to take her on a Hajj pilgrimage.

According to a report published in the DNA, the accused father Umar Farooq, was a drug addict. His family never gave him the money they got from rent as they were aware of this, said the report.

Reports reveal that Reshma's family was aware of Farooq's first marriage and married her off as they promised to take her to Hajj soon after marriage.

"We knew that Farooq was married to Nasreen but his family told us that they would take Reshma on Hajj a week after the marriage," said Attaullah, Reshma Banu's brother. [Read: After Baby Afreen blow,33 infants dumped in B'lore last yr]

"Farooq’s father Aboobakkar Siddiq told us that Farooq’s first marriage ended in divorce due to Nasreen’s problems. They said Nasreen was possessed and would resist Farooq’s advances at night. We believed this and agreed for the marriage," said Attaullah.

"They forced us to conduct the marriage in a week because they wanted to go on Hajj. In our community, Hajj is very important. We don’t care if a person dies after visiting Hajj because it is equal to heaven," said Tousif, Reshma’s brother-in-law.

"Our financial condition is bad and nobody from our family can afford to go on Hajj in this lifetime. We thought, at least, Reshma would get a chance and gave permission for the marriage to be held in a week,” added Attaullah. “Unfortunately, a month after the marriage, we got to know Farooq used to harass Nasreen. He never took Reshma on Hajj," he said.

According to Reshma's family, Farooq's family failed to turn up to see the Baby while she was in the hospital and even after her death.

"We did not know they are such cruel people," said Reshma family members, adding: "We spent more than Rs 2 lakh for the marriage. We took loans from private financiers and we are still paying the interest."

3-month-old Baby Afreen fell victim to the cruel abuses of her father for being a girl. Her forehead bore the marks of cigarette burns, while her neck was dislocated when she was brought to the hospital by her mother. She died following a cardiac arrest on Apr 11 at Vani Vilas Hospital.
