Earlier, on Mar 30 the Lok Sabha ended with the issue of separate statehood of Telangana paralysing the house for the fifth consecutive day. Telangana MPs has submitted a memorandum to Congress President Sonia Gandhi demanding a constructive decision on Telangana.
The Union Health Minister and senior leader of Congress Gulam Nabi Azad has assured the MPs from Telangana that the party leadership would intensify its efforts to arrive at a decision on Telangana demand during the break. The UPA government will announce the decision in the House on Apr 24, he said.
Centre has been struggling to solve the age old demands of Telangana people. But nothing has been done till date to fulfill their demands. Moreover, at least 600 people committed suicide in last few days for the Telangana issue.
There are also speculation that the Congress-led UPA government is planning to constitute a Telangana Development Council with special powers and funds for rapid development of the Telangana region instead of formation of a separate Telangana state. The proposed development council is likely to go in the lines of the Darjeeling Development Council.
