Switch off lights for an hour on Mar 31 & save our Earth

Kolkata, Mar 26: Asking people to switch off lights for an hour this Saturday night as a symbol of a more sustainable lifestyle, Kolkata too will join the rest of the world in marking the Earth Hour. Being organised by international body WWF, the Earth Hour campaign has got support from Kolkata Municipal Corporation and West Bengal government's environment department.

Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee will flag off the tram tableaux at Curzon Park and observe Earth Hour from 8:30-9:30 pm to raise awareness and inspire individual action towards a better environment. The municipal corporation of Chandernagore will also urge people to switch off lights in Hooghly district.

"We aim to encourage cities to collectively shift towards sustainable development by undertaking better land, water and energy management which will reduce the growing environmental impact of our urban lifestyles," Ravi Singh, secretary general and CEO of WWF-India told reporters.

Sachin Tendulkar has been appointed as the national brand ambassador of Earth Hour. In India, Earth Hour has reached more than 130 cities, including tier II and III, small towns and even villages. Whichever city receives maximum participation from its citizens, organisations, institutions and government will be declared the Earth Hour Champion.
