Chennai, Mar 10: Tamil Nadu police faced criticism when a civil right activist brought the issue in the limelight that cops started enlisting the names of migrant workers, students and tenants' names in the state. The activist claimed that the move of the state police is against the Indian Constitutional rights.

According to Indian Constitution, any Indian can go, leave and work at any place in the country. The activist claimed that the police should not enumerate migrant workers, students and tenants on the basis of their language.

Migrant workers are to be registered under the Inter State Migrant Workmen's Act and the work should be done by the state labour department and not the police, said the activist while accepting the fact that accumulating information is not a crime though.

An advocate Geetha Ramaseshan, meanwhile, has been quoted as saying, "Such a move results in a sort of hate campaign against the people from the North."

The state police started enlisting the names of migrant workers, students and tenants following the recent crimes in the state.
