Subramanian Swamy indicts Chidambaram in UP riots 1987
While tweeting from his personal Twitter account, the Janata Party chief on Wednesday, Feb 29 says, "Why only Godhra? We discussed 25 years of Hashimpura too and PC's role in it."
"Yesterday my old friend Syed Shahubbudin dropped in at my residence to discuss the 1987 Hashimpura Maliana massacre by police of Muslims," added Swamy while continuing with his tweets.
Swamy's tweets surfaced when the entire nation has been discussing about Narendra Modi and his government's role in Godhra riots which completed ten years on Monday, Feb 27.
Hashimpura massacre took place on May 22, 1987, during the Hindu-Muslim riots in Meerut city in Uttar Pradesh when 19 personnel of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) allegedly rounded up 42 Muslim youth from the Hashimpura mohalla (locality) of the city, took them in truck to the outskirts, near Murad Nagar, in Ghaziabad district, where they were shot and their bodies were dumped in water canals.
A few days later dead bodies were found floating in the canals. In May 2000, 16 of the 19 accused surrendered, and were later released on bail, while 3 were already dead. The trial of the case was transferred by the Supreme Court of India in 2002 from Ghaziabad to a Sessions Court at the Tis Hazari complex in Delhi where it is the oldest pending case.
Congress was dethrone from power in the state following the massacre and Swamy's latest tweet naming Chidambaram may create another trouble for Congress as the party and its general secretary have been trying hard to get back the faith of Muslims to woo the voters.
Assembly election for the year 2012 has been underway in Uttar Pradesh and Rahul Gandhi along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi have campaigning in the state to re-build the party edifice, enticing various communities including Muslims. [Read More about UP assembly election 2012]
