Revolutionary SC verdict:All Indian rivers to be interlinked
"The project is in the national interest and we find no reason why any state or the centre would oppose this," said Justice Swatanter Kumar while delivering the verdict.
The extra-ordinary project should be implemented as expeditiously as possible, said the judgment of the court.
The apex court also constituted a high-powered committee headed by the water resources minister to work out the road-map for the project. The committee has been asked to meet at least once in two months. The recommendations made by the committee would be considered by the cabinet within 30 days of receipt.
Here it can be mentioned that the project was concieved about five decades ago and the then Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee had raised the issue during his tenure.
