Kolkata, Feb 27: IT-major Infosys is likely to scrap out its proposed IT project at Rajarhat, Kolkata, West Bengal after the Mamata Banerjee government refused to write to the Centre to grant it SEZ (special economic zone) status.

It is revealed that the company has informed the government informally that it will not go ahead with the proposed project and a formal announcement on the same is expected soon. [UPDATE: Infosys: Didi uprooted Tata's dream, now perishes Narayana Murthy's SEZ hope]

Reports suggest that the company officials will inform Partha Chatterjee, IT minister of the state by this week.

If the project gets scrapped, the opportunities of creating one lakh jobs (20,000 direct and 80,000 indirect) in the state would also be affected.

According to Chatterjee, the state government was not keen on forwarding Infosys’ application to the centre to grant it the IT-SEZ status for its proposed project at at Rajarhat-New Town. He further said that the state was instead looking for an alternative facility for the IT major to compensate it.

"After being informed about the government’s views, the Infosys has informally informed the state IT department that it would not set up the project. In the absence of SEZ status, the company would be at disadvantageous position on many issues," revealed sources.
