It's raining cash awards for Ind Oly qualified hockey team

New Delhi, Feb 27: Hours after Indian Hockey team booked a passage to the 2012 London Olympics with a speedy 8-1 win against France in the finals of the Olympic qualifiers in New Delhi on Sunday, Feb 26 night, cash awards trickled in for the players from every parts of the country.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced an award of Rs.100,000 to each member of the Indian hockey team while congratulated Indian men's hockey team for qualifying for London Olympics. Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda announced a bonanza of cash rewards to players, which would include Rs five lakh per goal scored by each player from Haryana in the final match.

Hooda also announced awards for other matches held in this series where Rs one lakh per goal would be given to players of Haryana. In addition, Rs 11 lakh per player would be given to each player hailing from Haryana.

The Indian Hockey team defeated France to reach Olympics after eight years. Earlier, in 2008, Indian team had failed to book an Olympics berth for the Beijing Olympics.

Moreover, Hockey India and a New Delhi based hotel announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh each for every player of the Indian team and Rs 50,000 each for every member of the coaching staff.

Though, the cash prizes given to the Indian Hockey team are very less compared to the cash prizes given to the Indian Cricket team after winning the cricket world Cup in last April. BCCI had given Rs 1 crore to every players of the team whereas Hockey team received only Rs 1 lakh.
