Indian diplomat to pay $1.5m to maid for shameful act

New Delhi, Feb 24: A senior Indian diplomat has been found guilty for her barbaric treatment with an Indian maid. While, US court has declared that the maid must be awarded with a compensation of $1.5 million for the exploitation.

Currently, Neena Malhotra, the diplomat is working with the MEA's southern division in South Block, she also served as the Press Counsellor at the Indian consulate.

According to US court, Shanti Gurung, the victim will be awarded with $500,000 by Neena for the "emotional distress" inflicted on her, as reported by the The New York Post.

The US court has found that the victim came to the US on the behest of Neena and Jogesh Malhotra. The family promised to pay her $108 per month for "light cooking, light cleaning, and staffing the occasional house party."

While, the court reports divulged that the victim used to to work for 16 hours a day. Apart from cooking and cleaning duties, she was "required to give Neena Malhotra daily massages, a chore that made her extremely uncomfortable."

Maas expressed her sorrow for Gurung and said that the victim was an "outrageous and shocking conduct. Her documents were seized, her travel was restricted, and she was not permitted to telephone her family."

"Significantly, Gurung was also deprived of food, which caused her to lose more than sixty pounds in just over three years and was subjected to physical and mental abuse," Maas added.
