Chennai, Feb 24: Congress President Sonia Gandhi refused to disclose information regarding her Income Tax (IT) returns. A Chennai-based RTI (Right to Information) activist, V Gopalakrishnan had sought details of her I-T returns from the year 2000-2001 to 2010-2011.

However, the Congress president claimed that her privacy would come to at stake if she discloses the details of her IT returns. Sonia Gandhi also asserted that there was no public interest involved in disclosing such information.

When approached by the assistant commissioner of income tax, New Delhi, the UPA chairperson claimed that she can not disclose such private information to third parties as it may cause unwarranted invasion of the individual's privacy.

Mrs Gandhi sought the Section 138 of the Income Tax Act, 1961 according to which information submitted to the I-T department by an individual was confidential and private in nature and cannot be disclosed.
