The 58-year-old leader, Stalin was expected to campaign for the crucial Sankarankoil reserve constituency by-election on Mar 18 at Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu. On Tuesday, DMK south zone organising secretary M.K. Alagiri had made an announcement on this front and stated that party treasurer M.K. Stalin would address workers’ meeting to kick off the campaign for the upcoming bypolls.
There was a public turf war brewing within the DMK on who will be the successor to head the DMK in future. Both Alagiri and Stalin yearn to head the party. Meanwhile, earlier Stalin had urged party members not to celebrate his birthday that falls on Mar 1. In a statement made earlier, he has been quoted as saying, "There has not been a single progressive scheme after the AIADMK came to power. We have also been witnessing deteriorating law and order situation, under which, the police has been instigated to foist cases against DMK leaders and push them into prisons.”
He appealed to partymen to observe his birthday as Ilaignar Ezhuchi Naal (Youth Awakening Day) and distribute welfare assistance to the poor and downtrodden.
On hearing the news of his hospitalisation, DMK members rushed to the hospital.
UPDATE: It has been reported across local media channels that Stalin has been discharged from hospital after undergoing certain tests and an angiogram.
