EC issues notice to Beni Prasad over minority quota remarks

Beni Prasad Verma
New Delhi, Feb 18: Election Commission of India on Saturday, Feb 18 issued a notice to Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma for violating the model code of conduct for promising sub-quota for Muslims if Congress came to power in Uttar Pradesh.

Sources said that the election body has issued the notice after scrutinized the video footage of his speech which he delivered at an election rally in Farrukhabad two days back where he had clearly said that reservation for Muslims would be increased if the Congress came to power.

Reacting to the matter Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid said that "Whatever Beni said was in his capacity as Congress leader and not as a minister. He made his comments on party manifesto, which mentions the reservation issue."

Earlier, the main opposition Baharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had attacked congress for bringing communal politics in the country.
