Pune bus driver who mowed down 9 people is 'normal'

Pune, Feb 6: With Pune city waking up to the shocking news of the MMTC driver mowing down 9 people when he rammed a bus into innocent people on the street on Jan 25, the driver Santosh Mane was reported to be mentally unstable. It has now emerged that Mane is normal according to hospital authorities at the Yerawada mental hospital. They have however not denied the possibility of psychotic relapse in future.

The extreme case of road rage also saw as many as 27 people being injured in the ruthless driving. As per a confidential report filed by the hospital, it has been now found that "nothing abnormal was found about the 30-year-old driver." The report was today submitted to the court of Judicial Magistrate (First Class) hearing the case.

Yerawada Regional Mental Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Vilas Bhailume has been quoted as saying, "We undertook two to three mental status examinations of Santosh Mane in a day. During these tests, we observed his orientation, appearance, thought disorders, perceptual disturbance, memory problems and judgment capacity."

Bhailume added, "A few members of our staff put Santosh Mane under observation round-the-clock. They monitored his behavior, speech, routine activities and any other abnormalities. Even clinical psychologist conducted few psychological tests on him."

"During his observation period at the mental hospital, we found nothing abnormal with Santosh Mane. However, according to the report by the doctor of Sasoon Hospital, we can not deny possibility of psychiatric illness as Mane had taken medical treatment few years back in Solapur....There is a possibility of relapses in future," Dr Bhailume said.
