The snake was found hanging in the compartment on a hook and was later caught by at Balasore station by Railway Protection Force, who were alerted by the passengers.
Passengers complained to the RPF personnel patrolling at the station following which action was taken,said Amulya Biswal, officer-in-charge of RPF at Balasore.
The snake is believed to have escaped while smuggling and was found hanging near the toilet, he said.
The train was stopped for at least half-an-hour so as to capture the 5-feet-long python. Forest department have been asked to take possession of the snake.
