1,500 nurses arrested in Tamil Nadu
Chennai, Jan 25: Around 1,500 nurses were arrested due to an agitation all across Tamil Nadu, the agitators are protesting against the government's order of appointing a nursing student.
In Chennai, over 500 protestors were arrested by police when they worsened the agitation. Some of the senior nurses at Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, Kilpauk Medical College Hospital and Stanley Medical Hospital refused to allow the nurses reported for the work. Nurses formed a chain in front of the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.
“Though we are not paid much, we continue to work in government hospitals since we consider this as a service to the patients. While we slog without a break, it is unfair for the government to appoint nurses from private colleges as meritorious students would be affected because of this decision,” said Ms Pushpalatha, a senior nurse at the GH.
Meanwhile, when senior doctors asked the protestors to come back to work, the protestors refused to do so. Then police were called to control the situation.
