Mullaperiyar dam: Subramanian Swamy in favour of Kerala?
Talking at a seminar on Sunday, Jan 22 at the Kerala state conference of ABVP at Kannur, he said that both Kerala and Tamil Nadu should arrive at the a conclusion over the issue.
He also said that Tamil Nadu lost the right to take a firm stand on the settlement of the issue through court, as M Karunanidhi, former chief minister of Tamil Nadu did not implement the Supreme Court's order to raise the water level of the dam from the current 136 ft to 152 ft.
He also blamed that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) for exploiting the issue.
The Mullaperiyar issue has become a bone of contention between neighbouring states Tamil Nadu and Kerala. While Kerala has expressed its fear that since the area where the dam is located at an area prone to earthquakes and any such consequences could cost the lives of millions situated at nearby places, Tamil Nadu has said that the dam is absolutely safe and poses no threat.
Subramanian Swami in 1999 had filed a transfer petition that all cases in different courts over the Mullaperiyar issue be transferred to the Supreme Court.
