Teacher finds balance in a/c equaling Ind's railway budget
Saha withdrew Rs 10,000 from his bank account only to realise that he was richer beyond his wildest dreams. Expecting his balance to be only over Rs 10,000, he was stunned when he got to know that there was Rs 49,570,08,17,538 left in his account.
Saha immediately alerted his friend at the State Bank of India (SBI) who in turn intimated the authorities. Saha has been quoted as saying, "On Sunday evening, when I was checking my savings account balance on the internet, I was expecting an amount of a little more than 10,000 rupees. I called up a friend in the bank and joked, maybe money is overflowing in your bank, that's why your system has remitted so much money into my account."
The teacher hails from Balurghat town in South Dinajpur district and works in a school in the eastern state of West Bengal for a monthly salary of is Rs 35,000.
Chief manager of the bank's branch in Balurghat, Subhashish Karmakar did not give any comment on the matter and only said that he had no idea on how the money got into Saha's account. He added, "I have been specifically asked not to comment on this issue."
Sources in the bank have been quoted as saying that the regional headquarters in Calcutta and national headquarters in Mumbai have been alerted. Saha added, "Even though I got my money back, the account still holds the massive figure as uncleared amount. I don't know how long I'll have to keep that astronomical figure in my account."
The officials, however, state that Saha will not be able to withdraw the humungous sum since they are uncleared.
