Mullaperiyar:Tamil Nadu right,Kerala wrong?Shocking Rpt soon
Ashwini Kumar on Sunday, Jan 15 said that Mullaperiyar dam was "safe" and the state has taken all necessary steps to ensure the people about their safety.
However, the two states are waiting for the report which is expected to be submitted by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Roorkee as the institution has been asked to do a dam-break analysis. In the preliminary report, IIT-Roorkee is believed to have identified that a large area of Kerala might be under water if the dam collapses.
Meanwhile, Ashwini Kumar's statement brought criticism as he was not supposed to issue a statement when the case over Mullaperiyar dam is still pending in the Supreme Court.
Here it can be recalled that Kerala raised alarm over the "dangerous" Mullaperiyar dam saying that the dam was not safe and might be a cause of the death of many as it may collapse anytime soon. Kerala asked for decommissioning of the existing dam and also demanded to construct a new dam.
Tamil Nadu, however, overruled Kerala's demand saying that there were no threat to the dam and also demanded to increase the water level of the existing reservoir from 136 feet to 142 feet.
