Senior military officials have not yet revealed the names of the Marines, though media reports say that the identified US Marines were members of the Third Battalion, Second Marines, which completed a tour of Afghanistan this fall before returning to its base at Camp Lejeune, NC.
White house spokesperson Jay Carney had condemned the video and said that it was unacceptable.
Youtube and some other websites had shown the video in which four US Marines were seen urinating over several Taliban corpses.
“While we have not yet verified the origin or authenticity of this video, the actions portrayed are not consistent with our core values and are not indicative of the character of the Marines in our Corps. This matter will be fully investigated," said a statement from the Marine Corps.
US military officials said that the video appeared to be authentic at first look. Meanwhile, a US-based Muslims civil rights group has written a letter to Defense Secretary, Leon Panetta condemning the US Marines' act.
