Election Commission reschedule UP assembly elections date

Lucknow, Jan 9: The Election Commission of India rescheduled the date of first phase of UP assembly elections to Feb 8. The decision has been taken in the wake of Barawafat celebrations, the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad, which is to be observed on Feb 4.

According to EC source, the first phase of poll will now be held on Feb 8 in the 55 constituencies of Sitapur, Bahraich, Shrawasti, Barabanki, Gonda, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar, Faizabad, Basti and Ambedkar Nagar districts.

Earlier, the first phase of the poll which was announced on Feb 4 in 60 constituencies of Pilibhit, Rampur, Bareilly, Kheri, Shahjahanpur, Badaun, Moradabad, Bijnor, Bhim Nagar and Jyotiba Phule Nagar has been postponded. Sources said that elections in these seats will likely to be held in March first week.

Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are to be held in a seven-phase manner, between Feb 4 and 28. With the change in dates, it would be held from Feb 8 to Feb 28. Meanwhile, UP governor will be issued a fresh notification for the Feb 8 polls on Jan 12.
