Mullaperiyar: Chidambaram continues to face Kerala irk

Mullaperiyar dam
Thiruvananthapuram/New Delhi, Dec 19: It has been a tough time for the Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram and the controversy over his comment on Mullaperiyar dam added fuel on his jittery. Despite his withdrawal of his statement on the dam, he faced stern criticism from political leaders from Kerala.

Union Minister from Kerala, Valayar Ravi on Sunday, Dec 18 criticised Chidambaram and claimed that the home minister's statement on Mullaperiyar was "politically immature."

Here it can be recalled that citing criticism from all over the country, especially from Keralites, Chidambaram retracted his comment saying that Kerala is raising ruckus over the dam row keeping in mind the upcoming Piravom by elections in the state.

According to media reports, Chidambaram had said that he hoped the Supreme Court's verdict on the Mullaperiyar issue will favour Tamil Nadu. He also said that the Mullaperiyar Dam was built for Tamil Nadu.

However, later he was forced to withdraw his statement as he said, "Like some other speakers, I also made a passing reference to the forthcoming by-election. I take back that remark."

Here it can be mentioned that Mullaperiyar dam has been a disputed issue between the Tamilians and Keralites. Where Kerala is compelling on the rebuild of the dam, Tamil Nadu government still continues to believe that there is no threat posed to the Mullaperiyar dam.
