Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appointed CID to probe into the hooch tragedy which has claimed almost 170 lives so far. Sources informed that the main accused in the case - Khora Badshah, alias Noor Islam Fakir had been enjoying the support of CPI(M) earlier, but later after the change in the state government shifted his loyalty to the new government.
Meanwhile, the CM, during an interview with a Bengali TV channel, blamed the CPI(M) and chided, "Illegal liquor business has been taking place for long in the state. When we try take action to stop this business, resistance comes from different quarters."
However, the CM has already issued a circular asking the police to shut down all illegal liquor shops in the state and also urged the general people not to intervene in police action.
The state government also announced Rs 2 lakh for the kins of the deceased as compensation and Rs 10,000 also will be given for the last rites of the victims. The government has also vowed to punish the culprits.
Despite such assurance from the state government, the rumours about the culprits' connection with the political leaders has maligned the government's image.
