Kolkata, Dec 15: A retired judge of the Calcutta High Court will conduct a judicial enquiry into the AMRI Hospital fire that left 93 people dead. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced in the Assembly that retired judge Tapan Mukherjee will be conducting an inquiry into the fire incident.

The government had earlier announced a judicial enquiry into the incident, but had not named the judge. Describing the fire incident as "shameful" and "shocking," she condoled the deaths and said such incidents could not be tolerated.

Some people had been arrested and stern steps would be taken against other accused, she said. Compensation of Rs three lakh from the state government and Rs two lakh from the Centre was being given to the families of each of the deceased, Banerjee said. She said the Centre had given Rs one lakh to those injured in the incident.
