Kolkata, Dec 13: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today (Dec 13) announced that jobs would be given in the Green Police unit to the locals who had taken part in rescue operations during Friday's devastating fire at AMRI Hospital.

Giving away a medal and Rs 5,000 to each of the 65 youths, who live in the Panchanantala slum behind the AMRI Hospital premises in South Kolkata, Banerjee said "we have decided to offer them jobs as Green Police if they want."

The civic police volunteers, known as Green Police, assist the Kolkata Traffic Police in traffic management. Of the 65 youths who were awarded for their bravery, two could not be present as they were undergoing treatment in hospital after falling ill for inhaling the smoke.

While Sankar Maity's mother Sabitri received the award on behalf of her son from the chief minister, Bonomala received the award on behalf of her husband Tarit Purokait.

Banerjee also congratulated the Kolkata Police commandos and disaster management group personnel for rescuing a number of patients from the hospital. Regarding the formation of a judicial commission which was announced by her, the chief minister said "I am looking for a judge who will head the commission."
