The youth is understood to have been inspired from messages posted on Facebook. The Mullaperiyar messages were posted on a "I Hate Prithviraj" page that has close to 26,338 members. Prithviraj is a popular Malayalam actor. The message requested people to attend the fast and show their solidarity to the cause. The members said that the date of the fast will be announced later.
This is the first organized protest that was triggered by a message posted on a social networking site. The message was posted by a resident of Thrissur district, Sarath Lal who called on all the youngsters to protest rather than sitting in front of the computers. More than hundred messages were posted as response.
Sarath added that the date of the fast is being discussed among active members in the group. Emotions seem flaring for all those who want to rebuild the aging 116 year old Mullaperiyar dam. According to reports, in case of a dam burst, millions of people across four districts in Kerala namely Idukki, Ernankulam, Kottayam and Alappuzha will be wiped off completely.
One of the fiery comments on the Facebook page reads, "Even though the page is really for Prithviraj haters, in this issue we are seeking support from all sorts of people. It will become a massive agitation just like those held in the Arab countries. Don't wait until an Anna Hazare comes. It's time to react…"
