Srinagar, Nov 21: Chief Minister, Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah rubbished rumours that the state was to ban Facebook following protests over alleged blasphemous comments on the social networking site.

"Stop the rumour mongering. Govt (government) has no intention of banning Facebook. Only a request to block certain blasphemous pages has been made," read his tweet on Twitter.

The Chief Minister however, confirmed that requests were being made to the social networking site to block some of blasphemous pages that could lead to religious disharmony in the state.

After objectionable picture posts were seen on Facebook, Ali Muhammad Sagar, Law Minister said that the government was thinking to ban the site following blasphemous posts regarding holiest place, Kabba in Saudi Arabia and Islam.

Peaceful protests were held by many students in Srinagar last week demanding that Facebook be banned.
