Jairam writes again to Maya over MNREGA scam; demands probe

New Delhi, Nov 17: Union Rural Development Minister, Jairam Ramesh on Thursday (today) has written another letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the misuse of MNREGA funds.

The Rural Development Minister has demanded a strong CBI probe into the seven districts spread across UP where central funds have been allegedly misused by the state. These districts are Balrampur, Gonda, Mahoba, Sonbhadra, Sant Kabir Nagar, Kushinagar and Mirzapur.

Meanwhile, the second letter by Ramesh comes days after Mayawati wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rubbishing all charges put by the Rural Development Minister earlier. She had termed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. She also mentioned in the letter that action had already been ordered.

Earlier, Jairam Ramesh had alleged that the implementation of MGNREGA in Uttar Pradesh has been "far from satisfactory" and many "serious and brazen" violations and cases of "deliberate embezzlement of funds" have been coming to the notice of the Rural Development Ministry from time to time.
