Online encyclopaedia Wikipedia opens 1st office in India
The first Wikipedia office in India has been set up at the national capital (New Delhi) with the aim to attract more online readers through local languages. It has been reported that Wikipedia has set up its first ever office outside the USA.
The founder of the online encyclopaedia, Jimmy Wales started working on it in 2001 with its base in San Francisco. In an interview, Wales was quoted as saying, "Our vision is for people to have an encyclopedia in their own language not their second language."
At an event in Bangalore to celebrate its 10 years (Jan, 2011) and spread awareness about contributing to Wikipedia, the organisers announced their decision to open its office in India.
With the new move, Wikipedia is expected to strengthen its service in Hindi as well as more than 20 local languages in India. It has been noticed that Contributions to Wikipedia in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu and Bengali languages is growing everyday. [Read: Wikipedia enhances its Bong connection]
