Lucknow, Nov 2: Expressing concern over increasing incidents of crime against women, President Pratibha Patil today said the issue needs “fullest" attention of law and order authorities and advocated for marshal arts training to girls.

“The rising trend of crimes against women in rural areas and cities is an issue of deep concern…It deserves fullest attention of law and order authorities, as also of all members of society, who must together work to create a safe and secure environment for women," she said at Isabella Thoburn college here in a function to celebrate its quasquicentennial anniversary.

The President said, “Girls should be taught judo and karate as self-defence is the best defence." Patil said women need to be empowered as it “would have a very big impact on the society…if we make progress on gender mainstreaming, more and more women will become full partners in the activities of the nation and society." She, however, cautioned this was likely to generate another set of challenges, which would need attention.

“When a woman joins the workforce, we need to think of issues that can crop up regarding childcare support, balancing home and professional lives…We, therefore, need approaches that are not only comprehensive but also forward looking so that challenges of an evolving society can be met," she said.

The President said there is a strong correlation between women"s education and their overall progress.

“If women are to find their rightful voice, it would only be possible if they are properly educated, and given training in skill building," she said, adding that this would also enhance their self-esteem and confidence.

On the occasion, the President also released a special postal cover on IT college on completing 125 years.
