“A team of Russians was flown in to get the machines repaired. The fact that the new machineries got faulty even before the reactors became operational is disturbing," said a nuclear engineer, Bhabha atomic research centre, Trombay.
The engineer further said that the machineries were imported from Russia about ten years ago.
Meanwhile, Russian engineers and technicians escorted by commandos of the CISF were seen entering the Nuclear power plant reactor over a last couple of weeks giving rise to the speculation that the power plant was being loaded with real fuel. Officials also claim that the trial runs of the reactor with dummy fuels were a success.
People have been agitating and fasting since Oct 18 against the setting up of the Nuclear Power Plant keeping in mind the safety issues. The AIADMK government also came forward in support of the agitators in their fight asking the government to address the issues raised by the commoners.
"They are being transported through sea and there is every chance of them getting damaged during the journey and shifting," said Mohan Raj, convener of Green Movement, Tamil Nadu.
"The scientists and technicians are virtually under house arrest because of our arrest," said Pushparayan, leader, PMANE that the work at the nuclear plant came to a standstill.
Meanwhile, various supporters of anti-nuclear energy movements and environmentalists will assemble in Thekkady, Kerala next week to plan an awareness programme and nationwide agitation against nuclear power plants.
