Mamata Banerjee, CM, West Bengal
Kolkata, Oct 22: Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee's 7 day ultimatum to Maoists to lay down their arms ends today.

In response, the Maoists have called for a day long bandh in the Junglemahal area- a stronghold of Maoists. The bandh was announced after the Maoists refused the ultimatum given by the government.

"Make the bandh in Junglemahal on Saturday a success against the injustice meted out to the people of the area," said Akash, Maoist state committee secretary in a pamphlet found in the Junglemahal area. Akash had escaped a raid by the joint forces on Tuesday in West Midnapore district.

Mamata Banerjee in a rally had slammed the Maoists for continuing killings despite the operations halted against them by the joint forces. She had then given them a 7-day ultimatum to end violence in the state.

The agitated Maoists said that they were insulted by the Chief Minister's remarks.

The Maoists were joined by Mahasweta Devi, writer and Tribal rights activist in their fight and asked the state to withdraw armed forces from several parts of the state.
