With many factories in the city shut down due to the power situation, prisoners are finding it difficult to earn their salaries as they are only paid if they work.
The jail officials are also finding it difficult to engage the inmates in the jail during the day as there is no work. The security situation has also become vulnerable in the jail as the electric fencing work only with the support of generators.
The Cherlapally Central Prison falls under the Cherlapally industrial area where a two day power holiday has been declared.
“Water pumps can"t run on two phase power supply and we are unable to water 128 acres of fields in the open air jail. We are totally dependent on the generator. If something goes wrong with the generator, then there will be a total black out in the jail," said K. Sreenivasa Rao, superintendent, Cherlapally central prison and in-charge of the prison.
