To fight doping, NADA begins testing of junior athletes

New Delhi, Oct 8: Continuing its drive against doping menace, National Anti Doping Agency has started testing the junior sportspersons below the age of 18 in out-of-competition training camps.

NADA has recently carried out sample testing of 13 male basketball players below the age of 16 years, who were camping here and are to leave for training abroad.

"In view of making sport free from doping, National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) has been conducting Out-of-Competition testing at various SAI Training Centres. In continuation of this effort, NADA has also commenced testing of Junior Sportspersons below the age of 18 in the Out-of-Competition training camps," NADA Director General Rahul Bhatnagar said in a release.

"In this effort NADA has recently carried out sample testing in respect of 13 (Male) Basketball Players below 16 years who are camping in Delhi and are to leave for training abroad. Samples were collected on 23.09.11 and results are awaited from NDTL.

"NADA will be conducting sample testing of junior level sportspersons on a regular basis in the coming months," the release added.

In the past few months, NADA had conducted surprise raids at the top training centres, including the National Institute of Sports in Patiala and SAI facilities, after six track and field athletes tested positive for banned steroids.
